Joe Boyle, AIA - Founder
Joe Boyle grew up in Chicago, with his eyes on the city's iconic skyline. He studied architecture in Milwaukee and Paris and worked for an international architecture firm in New York before attending graduate school at the University of Texas, earning design awards and a travel scholarship to Iceland. His professional career includes notable Austin design firms, leading numerous award-winning projects at Alterstudio and Clayton Korte.
While in New York, Joe mentored inner-city high school students in architecture. He maintains his commitment to civic duty, serving on the capital projects committee for The Trail Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to protecting, enhancing, and connecting the Ann and Roy Butler Trail at Lady Bird Lake for the benefit of all.
Joe’s childhood was a blend of urban living, weekends at his Nana's rural farm, and camping trips, fostering a deep connection to both cityscapes and nature. He is a stargazer, a cyclist, husband and girl dad. Joe launched Outward Architecture in February of 2022 as a means to unify passion for architecture and the outdoors.
Robbie Anderson, Assoc. AIA - Project Designer
Robbie grew up on the South Carolina coast and made his way to Austin via Nashville, TN. He studied music before receiving a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University, where he gained an appreciation for the mechanics of the built environment. His professional career began in the electrical equipment industry until he earned his Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin.
He has practiced in Copenhagen, Denmark, and has cultivated a belief in creating resilient architecture that transcends basic needs and elevates local communities. Robbie’s professional work has previously focused on the adaptive reuse of historic landmarks — he appreciates when new architectural interventions respond humanely to context and historically significant structures, and afford new opportunities to connect with the outdoors.
Robbie is the current chair of AIA Austin’s LGBTQIA+ Alliance, where he advocates for queer visibility in the profession and the preservation of queer space. He is a cine- and telephile who enjoys Sunday mornings at Barton Springs, learning French, and pretending he’s a runner.
